Why Many Adult Smokers Choose Vaping

Vaping is widely seen in Canada as a less harmful alternative to smoking cigarettes for adults who already smoke. While vaping is not risk-free, Health Canada states that completely switching from cigarettes to vaping can reduce exposure to many of the harmful chemicals found in tobacco smoke.

Vaping vs Cigarettes

-No combustion: Cigarettes burn tobacco, creating smoke that contains thousands of toxic chemicals. Vaping does not involve burning, which significantly reduces harmful by-products.


-Fewer toxic substances: Vaping aerosol generally contains far fewer harmful chemicals than cigarette smoke.


-Reduced odour & residue: Vapour does not linger like cigarette smoke on clothing or in indoor spaces.


-Alternative for adult smokers: Many adults use vaping as a way to move away from combustible tobacco.

What Health Canada Says

Health Canada does not recommend vaping for non-smokers or youth, but recognizes that for people who currently smoke, switching completely to vaping is less harmful than continuing to smoke cigarettes. The greatest benefit comes from fully replacing cigarettes, not using both.
